According to an article I read, raised garden beds were supposed to help deter rabbits from invading your garden. The theory is that jumping into something would make them more vulnerable to prey.
I'd like to know how high they should have been raised, because it sure hasn't done much to keep them away from mine! At our old house Ornery was doing something in the 12 inch raised bed we had outside the back door when the leaves began moving. He uncovered five newborn bunnies in the bed.
This spring when I went out to look at something in the back yard I noticed my 18" high strawberry pot had been disturbed. And when I say disturbed, I mean half the soil was gone. A rabbit had made a cozy little nest inside. I am guessing my strawberry plants won't make it this year.
I am grateful we live a ways into our neighborhood instead of on the fringes. Less than a half-mile away is a large open field where deer have been frequently spotted. At least I only have to fend off the bugs and bunnies!
Do you garden in raised beds?

this morning a dove flew into our kitchen window BONG, and then it just sat there dazzed.
ReplyDeleteWe also had foxes sitting outside of our door, they tend to steal your shoes, and deers and bulls in the garden...awh living in the countryside :D
I always feel so sorry for those birds who can't seem to get it that a window is not a good place to fly toward. How wild that the foxes steal your shoes!
DeleteThanks for your visit. I always love hearing from you!

Had crummy bugs around and a few mice here and there. Also some coyotes too.
ReplyDeleteWe have a lot of coyotes in Oklahoma, but not so many near our current house. Not a big fan of mice, but of course those little critters are everywhere!

I live in the city limits and we have all kinds of critters in our yard. Raised beds haven't helped us either. Just gets the leaves closer to the deer' mouths!
ReplyDeleteLol! Figures! We have never had any problem with deer but only because we have always lived in town and had a privacy fence around our garden. I am pretty sure we would have that same problem otherwise.
DeleteThanks for visiting!

This reminds me of when our older son played Peter Rabbit in a class play. Now I can't get the song out of my head. Hope the raised beds help.

My beds are raised, partly because the land slopes and the patio area has been dug out inside them. The other reason is that it should be easier to reach the weeds. However, I still have trouble bending. Thanks for your visit.

No raised beds for our gardens. Although we have plenty of rabbits we have cats who love to eat rabbit so they usually stay away. We have more of a problem with dear eating fruit off our tree's nothing we can do about that!
ReplyDeleteOh man, what a pain! We actually don't garden. I'd love to, but it encourages the bugs, and we have too many of those already in Florida. But, I find myself wanting to suggest you borrow a cat or dog to leave their scent in the garden area. I promise there will be less disturbance then. ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Ornery's Wife .. I don't have a garden now - but we have holes in the lawn ... squirrels hiding nuts, eating bulbs! I think raised beds are a great idea .. but by the look of it 3 feet high. Put in a fence that reaches down ...
ReplyDeleteFinding babies amongst the leaves and pots is a little worrying .. cheers Hilary
