A to Z Blogging: M is for Motto

Wow!  Who woulda thought I would have made it through the first two weeks without a missed post?  I wondered considering our work schedule at 507, but here I am, ready to go with week 3--almost half-way through the challenge!

Back in the insane years of homeschooling my children, I was involved with a group that was devoted to providing interesting opportunities for the kids and support for the moms.  One woman, a neighbor of mine at the time, was especially good at taking a simple idea and making it into a huge successful production.  Her motto was, "If it is worth doing, it is worth over-doing."  She ruined me for working with anyone else in the group since we shared the same mindset on organization and planning.  It was a long association filled with some amazing field trips and other activities.

Well, Ornery and I tend toward something similar for our motto, although we are trying to avoid the "over" part and think if a job is worth doing it is worth doing well.  Which is why the rental property we purchased is taking us so long to complete.  There is something that grates against my nerves to leave things unfixed or just slapped together. I hope our renters will appreciate the labor, but whether they do or not, we will feel better about the job we did.

So, what is your personal motto?

  1. Same for me with paintings, I could sit on one forever if there is even the slightest thing I am not happy with.

Also if you do the job well now, there won't be any need to come back to it and spend more time on it.

  2. Do it and it's done is mine, no sense waiting around.

  3. "Keep it simple, Make it easy." I also like "Get stuff free" :)

  4. I think mine would be 'One thing at a time.' I have a habit of taking on too much at once and trying to do it all at the same time. I like being busy, but it can become overwhelming, so I calm myself with thinking, one thing at a time, and it will all get done. :)

  5. Fun post topic! I don't know if I have a motto. I will have to chew on that one a bit...hmmm..... Awhile back it used to always be "Strive, believe, succeed!" Happy A-to-Z 2013! ~Angela, Whole Foods Living, http://www.wholefoodsliving.blogspot.com/

  6. Considerate landlords rock! We bought our first house a year ago, so after 12 years of renting, I know what I'm talking about. ;)

My personal motto? "If all else fails, eat cheese and be happy."

  7. Our motto has been, "If something is worth doing, it's worth doing poorly," which sounds like the opposite of your motto at first glance! However, since we both tend to be critical perfectionists, before this motto I especially just would not venture out to do lots of things BECAUSE I HADN'T DONE THEM BEFORE. Having to do something well meant perfect and there is just no way you can do something perfectly the first time! So, while we get no pleasure from doing things poorly and seldom do so, a great load has been removed that previously inhibited the trying of doing new things. Perhaps it would be better worded, "if something is worth doing, go ahead and do it however it turns out." Permission to fail or to come up short of perfect or well done is very liberating when you are launching out into something new.

  8. Our motto? Maybe that is what we have needed over our 40 years together! We used to say, "Next year..." but now we don't.
