Nature's Halloween Decor

This morning I was all done sleeping at 3:30. I love the early morning hours before the world starts moving around, the lights distract me and the calls of the day hit with full force. I think my system would love more sleep, but since I can't usually sleep for the three or four hours I need after that 3-4 o'clock wake-up, I often either do a meditation exercise or get up and start the day.

This morning I played catch-up from being a slacker yesterday--started laundry, cleaned the kitchen, fixed our lemonade, put things away from shopping, swept the floor, etc.  At about 4:00 I was HOT so I went out to the chilly back porch and sat (under a blanket!) in my rocker for about 10 minutes. I heard the owls hoot-hoot-hooting and saw one of them fly over the house.

As I was thinking about the owls, I remembered last night when I sat out there seeing some bats swooping around, the enormous full moon, and the big spider building a massive web between the pine and back fence.  Halloween is so commercialized and has such a strange mix of macabre and silliness that these natural wonders, which are thrown in for effect I suppose, get lost.

I haven't bought any pumpkins, and I don't think I will this year, but hopefully I will have some from my own garden to carve and set out next fall. I always enjoy looking at the piles of pumpkins and gourds that are on display through the month of October, and of course, all the lovely mums. Once I get my flower beds readied, I hope to plant those several places.

The leaves haven't begun to turn just yet, but with the cool nights, it won't be long.  The last little rain we got should help things along. We will harvest all the leaves that fall in our yard for the mulch pile so we can add them to our compost. While most people dread the raking of the leaves, I relish it!

I love each of the seasons for their own flavor they bring to life. God is lavish with the richness of His glory as He shares these beautiful natural bounties with us every year.  The older I get the more I appreciate Him.
