Last week I decided it was time to do something about my mop of hair. It has been turning gray at a rather alarming rate, and it was too long for my liking. I was tired of wearing it up in a pony tail, and I thought it might be nice to prolong the image of a dark haired woman for a little while longer, so I thought I might add some highlights to help merge with the gray. Well, my old (as in the length of time I went to him, not his age) hairstylist moved to Oregon sometime in the last two years since I went to him for a cut, so I had to try a new one. Thanks to Google's help, I found one not far from Zoe Cottage, and made an appointment for Friday at noon.
Young perky blonde stylists should not be allowed to work on slow, old, graying women. Just sayin'. So, I asked for a short cut and got a medium cut (although she did take about 4 inches off the back). I said I didn't want my hair in my face, it was more in my face when I left than ever. I said I really don't like a style with hair shorter in the back than in the front, she cut it shorter in the back than in the front. I said I didn't like a lot of product on my hair, she used four or five different things after she washed and conditioned. I said I really liked curls (thinking she might actually style it for me) and she scrunched my VERY straight hair with a diffuser on the dryer and said, "Look how curly this is!" Yeah, NO. It looked like I just got out of the pool and let it dry without combing.
It is shortER but not as short as I wanted it, or at least as short as I thought I wanted. I had her put highlights in, but while you can sort of tell they are there, they did nothing--not one thing--to disguise the gray. Sigh.
When I was done with the hair, I had my brows waxed and, for the first time ever, my lip. That part went well, at least, although I have never paid that much for the service before. I guess I am behind the times, or else I need to find another less expensive place to get dolled up on the rare occasions I think I should do so.
Just before I went to the stylist, Ornery called to tell me we got a house! After about 15 offers, we finally were accepted. This one needs a new roof, some windows and a few piers, but not much interior work. Closing is set for March 8th. We are going to be landlords!! That bit of news sent me on a flurry of activity, calling insurance, roofers for estimates, mortgage companies, etc. I was glad for the quiet of the salon, but my mind had a hard time slowing down.
Friday evening after the excitement of the day, I crashed really early. Ornery painted the first coat on the couch table.
Saturday morning we cut Ornery's hair, then ran a few errands. In the afternoon he wandered around Lowe's for a couple of hours while they put new tires on Big Red. Talk about sticker shock! Holy guacamole! Those four tires were over $1200.00! The old ones were cracked when we bought the truck almost two years ago, and the tread was really starting to wear thin. The truck only has 20,000 miles on it, so it seems like they should have lasted longer, but we think the previous owner must have left it in a hot place (he sure didn't drive it much!) so the tires took a beating.
After he got home, he worked on the couch table, sanding all the drips and little raised spots that seem to always appear when you paint, then he put on the second coat of orange vermilion paint. I did laundry, read for a while, and spent some time out in the man cave visiting with the painter. :)
Sunday Ornery was up early and had his coffee long before I woke up. He dressed and went to work for a few hours to try to fix a problem that was discovered just before he left work on Friday. While he was gone, I worked on a project for Ale, and made a birthday card for Ornery's brother. The card went okay, the other project, not so much. I managed to salvage it (I think) but it is not like I thought it would be. Hopefully it will be better, but I still have more work to do on it.
After lunch, Ornery worked on the rest of his "list" which included finishing off the couch table, changing the filters on the HVAC, and doing a little touch up work on the chairs he made for M&M. The couch table is awaiting the last bit of drying time before finding its new home in the dining room. Once it is in place and situated, I will post a photo or two. It is really quite lovely.
It was a very productive weekend for both of us, and while I have a few things to do early in the week, I am glad to see my list dwindling to a good stopping spot for a little "reset" time.
