First Harvest

I picked five tomatoes this morning.  One went directly into the mulch pile, but the rest are going in some pasta sauce today.  None of them would win any beauty pageants, but no doubt they are edible, and that is what counts, right?

The birds have been relentless this summer, and there are many plants they just don't seem to be able to leave alone.  This morning I noticed that the few sprigs that have come up on the asparagus crowns were stripped clean of all their leaves, and the little bits of moss rose that I have been nurturing back to health after their last munch-fest were showing more signs of abuse.  I have never seen anything quite like it!

One also might say I harvested another holly bush.  It is now nude of all its foliage and stands at the corner of the house like a scraggly sentinel with bare branches poking every which way.  It was one of the first things I noticed in the landscaping when we looked at the house--and said at that time, "THAT has to go!"  It took me two Thursday mornings with the pruners but I finally have it under submission, and I am pretty sure it won't take much to persuade Ornery to finish it off this weekend.  It is rather unsightly.  I feel sorry for the garbage man who picks up the bag as there are prickly leaves poking the bag from top to bottom.
